Searching and Moving Around on the Web

How do you move around on the Web?

A Web page may have hypertext links to other documents. That is, a word, group of words, or an image can be an anchor referencing another page somewhere on the Internet. Using this feature, you can go from one page to another with a click on the mouse button.

Most pages have links to other pages of the same topic or interest. Once you have found a page of your interest, you can easily find references to other pages. The pages are linked together like a spider web, hence the name World Wide Web. While reading the pages of certain interest, you may see a link to a page of another interest and decide to read it also, thus you wander around the Web from home. This activity is called "surfing the net".

What is a search engine?

One problem with the Internet is the difficulty in finding the information you need. Millions of Web pages are out there, but where and how do you find them?

You can start at the home page of your Internet Service Provider (ISP). We have listed some of the popular search engines. They have a database of Web pages and let you search for pages containing certain keywords. Good search engines have large frequently updated databases, fast results and a wide range of topics.

Some of these popular search engines are Yahoo, Lycos, and AltaVista. Most of these pages have anchors to other search engines, so if you can't find the pages you want, you can go to other engines from there.

When you go to the search engine web site, type in what you are looking for and click 'Find', the 'button' next to the search box. If you find thousands of results, you may want to narrow your search.

You can go to Yahoo! How to Surf School to learn a few tips and tricks.
